Beyond the Borders
of Basketball

Introduction

The National Basketball Association (NBA) has transformed from a primarily American league into a global sports powerhouse over the past several decades. This project explores the globalization of the NBA, tracing how the league’s influence expanded beyond U.S. borders through key historical events, international player recruitment, and strategic outreach initiatives. By analyzing historical records, player origin data, and league milestones, we aim to understand how international players shaped the modern NBA and how the league, in turn, adapted to a broader global audience. Our goal is to also examine the cultural, economic, and institutional impacts of this global expansion.
